Confronting the fairness question.
C.S. Lewis points out that if we seek happiness before we seek our Creator, we will in the end, be denied both. Jesus taught that meaning is found not in tenuous earthly pursuits but in seeking first the kingdom of God (see Matt. 6:33). What He meant was nothing less than the quest to know God’s heart. This is the goal for which our seeking ensures the certainty of its fulfillment. Happiness, on the other hand, is better understood to be the result of a life well lived, rather than the reason for living.
